Day 3

July 5, 2012 (Alexandra) Woke up and it was freezing cold! Frost on the ground and everything! I refused to get out of the tent until it warmed up. Jasin served me "breakfast in bed" :) We had a poop issue this morning - it was actually quite hilarious looking back on it. We walked a wonderful flat 3 miles to catch a shuttle to Tuolomne Meadows where the cheeseburger awaited :) We got our resupply of food which added like 8 llbs to my pack. I got to call Trevor and mom and Brianna - put me in a pretty good mood until I tried hiking w/ the added weight. Plus the double cheeseburger & fries were not settling well in my tummy. I ambled along for 1.5 miles before popping in my headphones and putting my boots back on. We walked through 5 miles of meadows that were flat! I moved pretty quick because the pack was heavy and I wanted it to be done for the day. I learned from an old man at the grille at Tuolomne Meadows that there is a pecking order to the level of "bad assness"outdoorsmen in these woods. Top of the chain are the rock climbers, then the Pacific Crest Trail thru hikers, then John Muir Trail thru hikers, then the high sierra loop hikers. There was some awesome people watching at this stop. On our way back to the trail we met a group who were just starting their second "thru hike" of the JMT. They had decide to skip the first three days because they were harder and didn't want to do them again. I think that's uncool. Also, met a girl whose mom runs a high sierra camp & the girl lives there all summer - no electricity! She's adopted and so is her sister - crazy. Tomorrow is Donahue Pass - nervous! We are camping tonight with Fred and his two sons, Reed & Forrest- they are cracking me up with their arguing every 5 minutes. I hope they go to sleep at a decent hour! Dinner tonight wasn't very flavorful, but I had a double cheeseburger for lunch so its all good. Love, Cheeseburger in Paradise
(Jasin) Today was a long day. Not by miles, but by alot going on. Last night we were awoken by several Mule Deer. Even once we knew they were deer I couldn't get back to sleep. The sunburn from the day before made my body go through all sorts of temperature changes during the night. The night got pretty cold and their was frost on the grass in the meadows at 6 30 when I could no longer sleep. I fiddled around outside for awhile before heading back into the tent to wait for the sun to come up over the peak. Once it did, the temp quickly warmed. We ate breakfast and got packed up and were on the trail by 8 45. Alex had a little potty issue but you can read her journal for that. We did our first 3.5 miles fairly quickly and made it to T Meadows by lunch. The father (Fred) and his two sons (Forest and Reed) caught up to us by Tiago Rd. We caught the shuttle to the Post Office, Grill and store where we had double cheeseburgers for lunch and picked up our food drop. Thankfully it all fit in the bear canisters. We got reception with my phone so we called the moms and brianna to tell them we were fine and that our personal GPS (SPOT) was not working. As it was still early in the day, we kept on to the trail and I got a little confused and missed a shortcut that could have shortened our afternoon by a mile. Fred and his sons caught the shortcut. We got into a good rhythm and put down some miles. It helped that the terrain was finally flat. The sun was hot and probably gave me another sun burn. We got to where we could camp which was just short of where we were shooting for. The site is right along a creek where there was a great spot for wading knee deep which felt good after 11 miles of hiking. I will say my pack weight after lunch was brutal and I am not looking forward to Donahue Pass with that weight. We are camped next to Fred and his sons and they are quite entertaining to watch. Dinner was not as good as the others so far. The sun has gone down and the mosquitoes are getting annoying so I will be heading in the tent now.
